Toronto Must Try- Uptown PowerStation

One of my favourite things about travelling is discovering new places. It’s not just about visiting a different city, it’s about trying new things. I’m always on the hunt for new restaurants, fun workout studios and interesting health food stores. I travel pretty frequently to Toronto, and try to make it a point to do at least 1 new thing on each trip to there. On my most recent trip, I decided to try a new studio I had  seen a friend posting about. It wasn’t a workout that I usually go for (I’m a Barre regular as you can tell from my Instagram) but I’m always up for a new challenge.

The Studio is Uptown PowerStation in North York Toronto. The small studio is hidden just off of Dufferin Street a few minutes drive from Yorkdale mall. They offer a wide variety of classes from spinning, to yoga to TRX and conditioning classes. Since I had never done TRX  before, I figured why not and I signed up for an early morning power TRX and conditioning class.

The first thing that struck me about the studio when I got there was how friendly the staff and the members are. I’ve been to many gyms where if you’re not a member it feels as though you’re walking into an inside joke that you’re not a part of. Uptown PowerStation was not like that at all. The trainers are outgoing, motivating, fun and friendly. The other people in the class are also friendly and encouraging. Everyone is just there to workout and have a good time.

The class was an hour long circuit format and was made up primarily on conditioning exercises that used both equipment and body weight exercises. The classes are small, so the trainers are focused on form, which can sometimes be lost in a group workout. My two favourite circuits in the class are ones that I never, ever thought I would enjoy- the sled and the tire flip. The tire flip is fairly self explanatory- you squat, lift and flip an enormous tire. It’s incredibly satisfying to accomplish even one of the flips, and even more so when you finish the full series. The sled is a little less of a sled, but more of a base with handles that supports the weight of 3 dumbbell plates weighing roughly 75-95 lbs. You push the sled to the end of a track, and then pull the sled back to the other end. Sounds easy right? Not one bit! But just as satisfying as successfully flipping over the tire.

This workout is challenging, but you can hear the excitement in the members voices when they talk about how far they’ve come since starting these classes. You’re pushed to complete the circuit, but advised never to do more than you’re body can do. It takes time to build this kind of strength, but the energy in the studio makes it fun and exciting instead of discouraging.

I’d definitely like to go back the next time I’m in Toronto and I fully recommend trying them out if you’re in the area! First class is free, so there’s no harm in trying!
